Thinking GREEN on Halloween
is as simple as 1–2–3!
When
considering products for your Green Halloween®, look for quality items
made from natural ingredients/materials that will be consumed or
enjoyed long past November 1st. If not, can the items be reused or
recycled? Are food choices healthy or healthier? In addition, look for
products that meet one or more of the following “3G” criteria:
1 – Good for People • Treats are organic or pesticide-free. •
Food items are made from healthy and whole ingredients and do not
contain high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, trans-fats,
artificial colors or flavors. • Non-food items are made from safe materials and do not pose any suspected immediate or long-term health risks.
2 – Good for the Planet •
Items are produced with Earth-friendly practices, such as by organic
farming • Preference is given to locally grown or made goods, which
alleviates the environmental impact from shipping. (Get to know local
farmers and shop with them!) • Non-food items are made from Earth-friendly materials such as sustainably harvested wood or recycled plastic. • The items include as little packaging as possible.
3 – Good for the local or global community •
The people making the items earn fair wages, exclude child labor, and
work in safe conditions. (Ideally, imported goods are certified Fair
Trade.) Manufacturer may give a percentage of profits to a worthy cause.
Great green tip: Save
$ reduce waste and benefit children by handing out just ONE treat or
treasure. If you are offering a variety of goodies, let them choose
which one they’d like to have. They’ll have fun picking and will
cherish the item more. |
